About 1/3 of the way down this long web page you will find slide shows with numerous pictures of blooms (flowers) for each of my 27 daylily varieties in 2019. Click on the upper left corner to start the slide show.
Breck's daylilies finally arrived! Left Holland on a slow boat to China (I mean the U.S.) on 09-26-19 and showed up at my office on 10-21-19 some 25 days later. They were in excellent shape … 18 of the 19 daylilies are greening up nicely as you can see from the pics below! The other one is dormant during the winter … so all 19 may be ok after all.
Just ordered 19 new daylilies from Breck's to be delivered this fall … probably in early Sept. If I like them, I will order more next fall. 26 of my 27 daylilies varieties came from Springhill Nursery. So it will be nice to try out another supplier. If you are curious, click on the pic below for the reblooming varieties I ordered. I included the foliage type: evergreen, semi-evergreen or dormant and the flower size … 6.0 inch is a large flower.
The last daylily bloom of the 2019 season was on 09-25-19. See pics below for best blooms during the last six weeks: Aug 11th to Sep 25th. Do check out the 2019 Daylily Blooming Season chart below which shows the date of the first bloom, last bloom and number of days each variety bloomed during 2019.
As of Aug 10, the latest rebloomers are my favorite pink daylily Barbara Mitchell & South Seas. And there are four other daylilies that have just sent bloom stalks up. My guess is they will be Elegant Candy, Earlybird Cardinal, Elegant Explosion & perhaps another Barbara Mitchell. We'll know for sure when the blooms open in 7 to 10 days.
On the new daylily front, I planted 15 new daylilies on June 10th. Two new varieties: Joylene Nichole & Sweet Tart and more of two varieties: Stolen Treasure & Marque Moon. Well … Joylene Nichole has started to bloom with Stolen Treasure soon to follow. See pics below.

Here we are in late July … which of the reblooming daylilies are flowering in the Houston heat with temps in the mid 90s? Stella De Or continues to bloom daily since mid April. Earlybird Cardinal & Always Afternoon seem to be the best rebloomers closely followed by Desert Flame, Elegant Candy & South Seas. To my surprise, a Garden Show started to rebloom on 07-20 followed by an Erin Lea on 07-27. See pics below. Blooming season chart by variety & daily bloom count charts have been updated thru 07-27.
Daylily plants of a specific variety all start to bloom within 4 or 5 days of each other. So how many days you enjoy flowers depends more upon the variety of daylily rather than on the number of plants (assuming you have at least say 4 plants). You can tell from the chart below, which varieties have bloomed the longest in Houston so far this year. Some daylily varieties have only 2 or 3 blooms per bloom stem while others such as Desert Flame, Lavender Stardust, Joan Senior and Elegant Candy have bloom stems with branches so each bloom stem may have 6 to 10 flowers per stem. Others such as Always Afternoon just keep on sending up new bloom stems!
The 2019 daylilies are shown in reverse order of appearance. Since Stella De Oro and Earlybird Cardinal were the first to appear … they shall be the last … kind of biblical if you think about it. If you click on the upper left hand corner of each daylily's slide show, you'll some of the daily pics I take each morning. Must give each variety its 15 minutes of fame … I believe Andy Warhol coined that phrase. Most of these daylily varieties are labeled as reblooming. See 2019 Daylily Blooming Season Chart to see if a particular daylily variety actually rebloomed in 2019.
You'll note that I have mixed up my 30 or so daylily varieties. Since each variety blooms around the same time, this assures that my daylily beds will have continuous blooms for 3 months from mid April to mid July. The peak blooming period is May 15 to Jun 15. So at May 24th, we are probably at or near the peak. There are 120 daylilies (3 rows deep) in my 40 foot long backyard bed (23 inches wide) facing east and another 60 daylilies (2 rows deep) in a 26 foot long bed (13 inches wide) at the end of my street. As I continue to take pictures each morning (the sun does take its toll … morning blooms look much better than evening), I will add more photos to the slide shows below. Earlybird Cardinal has been blooming the longest … therefore it has more pics. Erin Lea & Majestic Move are the latest to bloom … so have only one or two pics so far. I do try to keep track of which daylily in each bed is which variety. So far I've been batting 900 (baseball speak i.e. 9 out of 10) so far this season. Only way to really know is when the daylily blooms! A tough assignment … but someone has to do it! Plus each morning, I pinch off the previous day's blooms and toss them in designated spots (they do pile up … a mushy wet mess) On May 23rd, there were 61 blooms in the backyard bed and another 62 blooms in the front at the end of my street. Wow!
