Little Janie Beeblossom - a perennial gaura, flowers seem almost whimsical, ranging from white to pink, covered with mulch prior to Feb 15 snow & 13 degree temps, recovered as if nothing happened!
Matrix Pansies were planted 11-06-20. I lost maybe 50% during Nov - Jan ... they just wilted & died. I took no steps to cover the survivors with mulch before the Feb 15 freeze. After which, I broke off the frozen tops ... but underneath the pansies were very much alive. And look how pretty they turned out 5 weeks later!
Snapdragons - Burpee Double Supreme Mix & Topper Hybrid Snapdragon seeds were started indoors on 08-29-20. The seedlings were transplanted into the garden on 11-06-20. The Snapdragons were finally about to bloom on 02-14-21 .. then the freeze came. I didn't cover them with mulch before the freeze. I did cut the dead tops off leaving a green base at ground level. Just like the pansies, the snapdragons recovered and started blooming again on April 7th. Temps are starting to get into the upper 80s on a regular basis now that we are in the last week of April. So I imagine most of the plants will end up wilting in the heat within the next two weeks. Once a Snapdragon plant starts to wilt, it's history. No recovery ... but from freezing weather (13 degrees) ... that apparently isn't too big of a hurdle to overcome ... given the proper time of say 7 weeks or so.
Gerbera Daisies - The Daisies do die back when there is a freeze. I did cover them & the Violas with mulch prior to the Feb 15 several inches of snow & 13 degree temps. And they recovered ... not sure if they would have survived without the covering mulch ... but I think they would have. Gerbera Daisies do wilt in the 90 degree heat, but quickly recover if they get enough water.
Lettuce - Seeds were planted indoors on 08-18-21 and then transplanted into the garden on 10-04-21 and 11-02-21. From left to right - Yugoslavian Red, Four Seasons, Burgundy Delight & Black Seeded Simpson. Will start lettuce indoors mid Sep next year. It was too hot this Oct in Houston to grow lettuce outdoors.
We didn't count the number of tomatoes picked in 2021. But from the pictures above you can see we picked more than a few. However, the wet weather in mid May led to the rash of worms that kept the number of tomatoes picked well down from the 1,917 harvested in 2020. Exactly how many less no one will ever know!
